Grapes have been growing in Northern Illinois for a very long time. Especially along the banks of the Mississippi river. Although the region may not be the first place people consider when thinking about wineries, it is a thriving region for certain fruit varieties. Native Americans such as the Sioux and the Ojibwa tribes people ate the Vitis Riparia grape. They did not make it into wine though. Early French settlers named it the frost grape because it was the best tasting immediately after the first winter frost. At the time of the first settlements, wine was primarily made for personal use or for trade with the native people.Tell me more…
